what she means: it’s 2 am and I can’t stop thinking about the Pied Piper. Initially i thought it was just an old faerie tale but i’ve been reading up on it and it turns out that at some point in the town of Hamelin, a bunch of children really did go missing all at once in fact a stained glass window in the local church in 1300 was made to tell the story AND Hamelin’s written history literally BEGINS in 1384 with the sentence “it is 100 years since our children left.” There are a ton of theories about what the piper could actually represent but historians are pretty much convinced that something did take away children en masse in the 1200s in Hamelin and to this day we still use the phrase “it’s time to pay the piper.” When will we pay him? Who was he???? Like okay I see the theories but what if some flute paying faerie really just led a bunch of kids away in 1284 I cannot get over this.
Lore did an episode on one of the major theories, that it was an effort to colonize a recently claimed portion of land. You can trace the name records of that new region back to Hamelin, so this theory seems to hold up. It had been years of bad harvests and families were struggling to feed their families. They sold off their kids to the settlement efforts and were deeply ashamed of this. The recruiting agents who went around trying to collect people to go settle? Often wore colorful (pied) clothing.
“Gotham is now the future, see? It is the one grand riddle, one bigger than even I can solve, so take it away from me. Be the hero, people. The one found in every culture throughout the world. The hero who answers the riddle to prove his worth, to save his people. So, where are you, Hero? Where are you hiding?”
After flooding Gotham City, taking over its power grid and seemingly killing Batman, Riddler is now “in full control, nightly challenging the citizens to stump him with a riddle to prove they were smart enough to earn back their civilization.”
The Zero Year story is included on my list of “Recommended Riddler Reads”, and this .gifset was a lot of fun to sit down and figure out how to make. Credit for the city “stills” is here, they were the main source of inspiration to create this.
every woman on tumblr should have this on their dash
And every man
Look how nobody’s yelling or arguing or making things into a competition. Look how this is to straight up educate people through a different perspective. Look how effective that makes the message.
The last one really hit me. I never really thought about something like that could actually impact a woman’s life. Damn…
But look at the body language! The dude shying away from the catcallers! This speaks volumes; head down, close the jacket, step out of the way. Its little things like that that most definitely point out the differences here that everybody faces
